ECTACO English <-> Japanese Talking Partner Dictionary for Palm OS

Price: $49.95

English <-> Japanese Talking Partner Dictionary for Palm OS provides bidirectional word translation and synthesis of speech.

You can make your Palm speak English with ECTACO English<->Japanese Talking Bidirectional Partner Dictionary. Just select any English word and with one click make the speech synthesizer pronounce it for you. The synthesizer (Text-to-Speech engine) is based on a new approach to speech synthesis, i.e. formant synthesis, which creates a human voice simulation by modeling sounds of a national language.

The new English <-> Japanese dictionary is an extensive language resource. It supports the Japanese writing system and features several Japanese character input methods.

Input by Radical allows you to find a character by its radical. This method is mainly used in Kanji -> English dictionary. You can use the Japanese virtual keyboard to input Japanesecharacters. You can access the virtual keyboard by pressing the VK button in the dictionary.

Transliteration Input is supporting the frequently-used Japanese writing system kana which is based on two closely related systems Hiragana and Katakana. To use the Transliteration Input you should switch to "Kana-Eng" mode in the dictionary and enter characters in the Input Line. The dictionary will translate them automatically into corresponding Hiragana or Katakana characters.

The Talking Partner Dictionary for Palm OS has the following features:Special features:

  • Advanced English speech synthesis. The function is developed on the basis of the TTS (Text-to-Speech) technology.
  • Specialized Japanese character input methods (Input by Radical and Transliteration Input)
  • MorphoFinder™ function. It helps you to find the English source words (headwords) (past participles, gerunds, plural forms).
  • Spell-checker Vector Ultima™. It allows you to enter a word as you hear it and choose a spelling option from the list of suggestions.

About Kana, Kanji, and Romanization:

There are two types of scripts in Japanese: Kanji (characters) and Kana (syllabary). While any text can be written in both Kanji and Kana, Kanji is used to write the roots of native Japanese words, namely of all main parts of speech - nouns, verbs, some pronouns, some adverbs and numerals. Kanji reflects the meaning of a word and Kana represents the pronunciation.

Romanization is a system for representing Japanese characters with the Roman/Latin alphabet. It is a transliteration method which can be used for many purposes: street signs for visiting foreigners; transcription of personal, company, or place names to be used in another language context; or even simply for typographic emphasis. English <-> Japanese (Romanization) dictionary is an essential tool for those who are learning the language.
